Team Alvarez BJJ 2012 IBJJF Houston Open results were great! February 10-11, 2012 Team Alvarez representing Bruno Bastos and Team Nova Uniao took a small team of about 14 competitors with a mix of kids and adults. Saturday morning started early at 9am with Team Alvarez Kids team doing battle in their first ever IBJJF tournament. IBJJF tournaments are the most professional and the highest level of competition in the world. Jessica Crane took 1st place, John Gloria took 1st place, Justin Rebolloso took 1st place, John Paul took 2nd place and Ezekiel Vazquez took 2nd place to give Team Alvarez a great start to the day. In the Juvenile Blue Belt category was Jay Gloria taking Gold in his feather weight division. In the Women category Natalia Shelpler took Silver in the White Belt Light Feather Weight Division, Vanessa Two Lance took the Bronze in her White Belt Feather Weight Division and Danielle Alvarez took Gold in her first ever Blue Belt Light Weight Division. Vin Abadie took Silver in first ever IBJJF tournament in the Blue Belt Master Light Weight Division. On Sunday, A.J Tucker took Silver in his Purple Belt Heavy Weight Division. Teammates Cooper Cardinale, Jordan Shepler, Sal Martinez, Samuel Robledo and Joe Gonzales all fought hard but came up short in their first matches to be eliminated in the first round. It was a great weekend of competition and another great weekend of Team Alvarez displaying their skills and techniques on the highest level. Congrats to everyone that stepped on the mat and battled.

Alvarez Samurai Wrestler  Club Parker Richardson wins gold at the Allen State Warm Up Wrestling Tournament! After winning his Open Division last weekend Mr. Parker was invited to compete at the Allen State Warm Up on Saturday February 11, 2012,where he fought in the Division 3  75 pound weight class. Mr. Parker is 10 years old and only in his second season of folk style wrestling but has has now won to Open Division tournaments against 3-5 year wrestlers. Mr. Parker is very dedicated, focused and trains 5 sometimes 6 days a week in Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to get where he is today. Next weekend is the State Wrestling tournament in Houston, TX where Mr. Parker looks to continue his run at a State Title. Congrats to Mr. Parker on his victories this weekend and best of skill and technique at States!

On January 24, 2012 Mr. Alvarez landed in Lisbon, Portugal 4 days before he had to compete to get adjusted to the time change, atmosphere and have enough time to help cut weight to the Light Feather category. After landing in Portugal and getting some time to rest, it was time for Mr. Alvarez to hit the pavement running 3 miles in the morning and 3 miles in the evening every day with eating light, healthy meals in between. Mr. Alvarez also got some mat time in 2 days in a row at Pantera Negra where Professor Neto, a first degree Black Belt let Mr. Alvarez and Nova Uniao teammates Nick Nuila and Rico Bastos get some time to sweat and go over some techniques for the competition. After a few days of getting adjusted and keeping his weight down it was time for Mr. Alvarez to weigh in and take to the mats. Weighing in 2 lbs under at 139lbs with his GI on and had to be 141lbs, Mr. Alvarez made weight and began warming up with the crowd inside the auditorium already very loud and going crazy over some of the Black Belts that were already competing.  Mr. Alvarez came out focused and on fire as he was able to get passed  Black Belts from Switzerland and Spain to come out on top and win his division. After all the hard training and grueling work outs along with barely eating for about a week to make weight, it was all worth it as Mr. Alvarez is now a 2012 IBJJF European BJJ Black Belt Champion! This was a huge goal of Mr. Alvarez’s as he now adds the European’s to his competition resume and this tournament marking his 4th year competing as a Black Belt and 10th year of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitions. Mr. Alvarez started off 2012 with a great win in Europe and looks forward to other big accomplishments for himself and his team as the year continues. Congrats Mr. Alvarez on achieving a great goal!

To start the day off was Team Alvarez BJJ Kids Team show casing their skills and techniques against some of the best kids in the area to take 2nd place overall. Some of the medalist were Ethan Soto, Ethan Helton, Cameron Rusch, Parker Richardson and many others. Later on in the morning was time for the Adult and Teens Team to take to the mats where everyone fought hard against some very tough competition. Some of the new competitors for Alvarez BJJ that did very well were  Roman Malvaiz, Anthony Cano, Hector Suarez, Jacob Benavides and Brittain Valentine. Mr. Cooper Cardinale and Mr. Vin Abadie fought through a very tough Blue Belt Absolute division where they met in the finals to take 1st and 2nd place and split the $200 Absolute Prize Money.  Team Alvarez BJJ Adult Team tallied up enough points to take 3rd place. It was a great Saturday of competition and another great day for Team Alvrez BJJ. Congrats to all Team Alvarez BJJ competitors for putting it all on the line.

Team Alvarez BJJ Tournament of Champions 9 results were outstanding! On 1/14/2012 Team Alvarez BJJ took a small team down to Houston, TX to battle against some of Houston’s best! Danielle Alvarez had 2 hard fought matches in the NO GI division against some of the best female grapplers Corpus Christi has to offer. Danielle first had to get past Audrey Alvarez out of Team Paragon to make it to the finals where she met Ms. Lara Hallock also out of Team Paragon. It was a great match between both competitors with Danielle getting the better of the positioning and getting the Ref’s decision to take 1st place in the NO GI Advanced. Danielle then had a finals match in the Blue Belt GI division where she met up with Audrey Alvarez again to win by Arm Bar and take 1st place. Next up was Justin Rebolloso having some tough matches in the NO GI but was able to battle through and take 1st place in the Teen Advanced. In the GI, Mr. Justin had more wars with very tough competitors where he finished with a great 2nd  place finish. In the Men’s division, Mr. Cooper Cardinale also had great and tough matches as he battled through his division to take the top spot finishing with a Gold Medal. In the Absolute division, Mr. Cooper had an exhausting match with a huge 285 pounder giving up 100 pounds but was able to edge out a Ref’s decision to go on to the finals. In the finals, Mr. Cooper was able to get passed a tough competitor out of Team Tooke to take 1st place and earn all entries paid  Sponsorship to all Fight to Win tournaments in 2012. In the White Belt division, Mr. Bo Montier had some tough matches in the NO GI and GI divisions where he fought hard but came up short. It was a great weekend and a great way to start off Team Alvarez BJJ’s competition season. Congrats Team Alvarez!

Results are in! Team Alvarez BJJ are 2011 NAGA Worlds Kids & Teens Team Champions! After anxiously waiting for about a month since December 11, 2011 for the results to come in Team Alvarez BJJ Kids & Teens and Adult Teams finished the year strong. First off, Team Alvarez BJJ Kids & Teens Team took 1st place overall with 4,690 points with the 2nd place team coming in with 1,840 points. This gives Alvarez BJJ Kids & Teens Team their 7th NAGA Team Title altogether and their 6th NAGA Team Title in a row. Team Alvarez BJJ Kids & Teens Team has taken every NAGA Team Title that has been in the DFW area since September 18, 2010. Team Alvarez BJJ Adult Team took 3rd place in the GI division of the tournament out of about 80 teams and took 4th place in the NO GI division out of about 84 teams. Team Alvarez BJJ Adult Team accumulated enough points to take 3rd place Overall. This is a huge accomplish for both teams as they all trained and worked hard all year long to achieve these accomplishments. Team Alvarez BJJ wins big at  2011 TXMMA Awards! Final results are in and Team Alvarez had all 3 finalist win their respective categories for Female Grappler of the Year, Kid/Teen Grappler of the Year and Coach of the Year. First off was Alvarez BJJ Finalists Justin Rebolloso (14 Yr Old BJJ Green Belt) was voted as 2011 Kid/Teen Grappler of the Year. Mr. Rebolloso in 2011 competed all over the state of Texas and in the state of California winning multiple titles throughout the year including UFC EXPO Grapplers Quest Houston and IBJJF American Nationals Champ. Danielle Alvarez (17 yr old Blue Belt) received TXMMA’s 2011 Female Grappler of the Year fighting in the Juvenile Girls and Boys division along with majority of her competitions and wins coming in the Women’s 18-29 yr old divisions. Some of her notable wins in 2011 were IBJJF Houston, Dallas and American Nationals Champion along with Abu Dhabi Pro Trials winner in San Diego and San Antonio winning all expense paid trip to Abu Dhabi this April to compete against the best in the world. Head Instructor of Alvarez BJJ Mr. Danny Alvarez (Black Belt), entered and traveled with his team all over the state of Texas and California in 2011. Mr. Alvarez helped guide his team to multiple team titles in many different tournaments against some of the best teams in the country that have multiple affiliations received TXMMA’s 2011 Coach of the Year along with 2nd Runner Up for Black Belt Competitor of the Year. Mr. Rebolloso, Ms. Danielle and Coach Alvarez are very humbled by receiving these awards and very grateful to the TXMMA staff and the BJJ community for voting and honoring them with these great awards. Team Alvarez BJJ last Belt and Stripe Promotion of 2011 was a great way to end the year.  So many Alvarez BJJ students worked so hard all year training day in and day out, week after week,  month after month along with competing and dealing with injuries.  Ending the year with some great promotions for the Young Samurai’s from 4-12 yrs old in the kids program and 13-50 yrs old in the Adult/Teen program was very special.  In the Kids program so many received their first Gray Belts, stripes and advanced to Yellow and Orange Belt. In the Adult/Teen program Bryan Landin, Sal Martinez, Matthew Opalach, Zach Davis, Jordan Shepler, Jeff Lloyd and Eric Armstrong all received their Blue Belts. Yasmin Soto and Gustavo Ruiz received their Purple Belts. It was a big day for everyone and it was a great way to end 2011 and a great way to roll into 2012! Congrats again to everyone!
