May  5, 2013,  The 2013 IBJJF Dallas Open Alvarez Jiu Jitsu Arlington TX  results were amazing! Team Alvarez Jiu Jitsu out of Arlington TX representing the Bruno Bastos association and Team Nova Uniao brought home 12 Gold Medals, 4 Silvers and 2 Bronze Medals.  Team Alvarez scored 122 points out of the 243 points Team Nova Uniao scored altogether and needed to take home the 1^st place Team Trophy for the 3^rd year in a row.

Team Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Arlington TX had a great 2012 competition that has snow balled into the 2013 season with great wins and victories at the 2013 IBJJF Boston, Houston, Pan Ams (Irvine, CA), New York and Las Vegas Opens that helped prepare them for the Dallas Open.

5/3/13, It was another great and successful weekend for the Head Instructor of the Alvarez BJJ Arlington TX academy as Mr. Danny Alvarez takes Gold at the 2013 IBJJF Las Vegas Spring Open on Saturday April 27, 2013. Mr. Alvarez flew out to Las Vegas by himself this time as he was fresh off his previous win from the weekend before at the 2013 IBJJF New York Open on April 20th and rode that momentum into the desert at the IBJJF Las Vegas Spring Open to bring home the Gold on back to back weekends.

Mr. Alvarez had 2 very tough opponents in his Black Belt Senior 1 Feather weight division where he was able to win his semi final match by Bow N Arrow Choke submission and won his finals match by points to give him the Gold.

President of the Nova Uniao association in the United States, Mr. Gustavo Dantas, was a huge help to Mr. Alvarez as he took the time to help guide and coach Mr. Alvarez through both of his victories even though he had his own team their to coach.

Mr. Alvarez really tries his best to Lead from the Front and Not from the Back by competing himself  and showing his students that competition is more about Improving and Learning from each match and competition to help you get better. Mr. Alvarez always explains to his students that once you let go of the Fear of Losing or Disappointing your peers is when your True potential will really shine through.

5/2/13, Dallas NAGA Results are in! Team Alvarez BJJ Arlington TX are 9 X in a row Team Champions! The Kids & Teens Team of Alvarez BJJ Arlington TX continued their winning streak on April 13, 2013 by winning their 9th consecutive NAGA Team title.  The Alvarez BJJ Kids & Teens Army also scored their most points ever with 6,190 points and took 1st place out of about 85 teams that came into the DFW area to test their skills.

Day 2 of NAGA was a very exciting day for Team Alvarez as they had Kids and Teen competitors going on just about every mat the entire day. Everyone did great with a good majority winning double gold in their divisions. Team Alvarez also had a good handful of new competitors to the team win their divisions with just 2-3 months of training. Big congratulations to everyone that stepped out on the mat and competed. Win, Learn or Draw, everyone fought their hearts out and left it all on the mat.  All the coaching staff and parents couldn’t be more proud of the Jiu Jitsu and sportsmanship these young warriors displayed throughout the day.

The Adult team of Team Alvarez Jiu Jitsu Arlington TX had an amazing day as well and brought home the 1st place Team Trophy in the GI division out of about 45 teams and took 3rd place in the NO GI division of the tournament out of about 70 teams.

One of the stand outs of the day was Mr. Rennie Crisafulli (37 year old Blue Belt) edging out Mr. Daniel Weber (27 year old Black Belt) out of Texarkana BJJ in a very exciting and close match.

It was a very long but successful weekend for Team Alvarez BJJ Arlington TX at the 2013 NAGA Dallas. The Kids & Teens Team of Alvarez Jiu Jitsu accomplished something no other team in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex has done before with winning their 9th consecutive title. Team Alvarez would like to thank all the parents and coaches that dedicate so much to the program to make victories like this happen. The Alvarez BJJ Kids & Teens team look to make it 10 consecutive NAGA Dallas Team victories when the NAGA tournament returns to the DFW metroplex later this year in December for the NAGA Worlds.

4/20/13, Alvarez Jiu Jitsu Arlington TX 2013 IBJJF NY Open Results: It was another great weekend for Team Alvarez Jiu Jitsu this past Saturday in New York, NY at the 2013 IBJJF NY Open as Mr. Danny Alvarez and Mr. Jordan Shepler both took GOLD in their divisions.

Head instructor of the Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy in Arlington, TX fought in the Black Belt Senior 1 Feather Weight division were he won his 1st match by Bow N Arrow Choke and won his finals match by Referee’s decision.

Mr. Jordan Shepler fighting in the Blue Belt Master Middle Weight division won his first 2 matches on points then won his finals match against a very tough competitor from Puerto Rico by Bow N Arrow Choke.

Both Mr. Alvarez and Mr. Shepler have competed at the IBJJF NY Open before but both came up short with Mr. Alvarez taking Bronze in the both his weight class and the absolute division and Mr. Shepler losing in the first round of last year’s NY Open.

Both competitors had Redemption on their minds as both are very competitive and hate losing just like any other competitive athlete. While some have a hard time coming back from a Loss and sometimes just Give Up. Mr. Alvarez and Mr. Shepler knew that what happened the last time they did the NY Open was just a moment history that just did not go their way and that this time things would be much different.

This is the Mind Set that training at Team Alvarez BJJ in Arlington TX gives you. One of the Student Creeds at Alvarez Jiu Jitsu Arlington TX is “Failure Is Only Permanent If You Give Up!” “Never Give Up!”. This along with all the great training partners and support that Team Alvarez gives you, helps you understand that Losing is a just apart of the Learning Experience one has to go through in order to reach one’s goals. Coming up short of your goals is apart of Life and Competition and once you understand that it becomes easier to let go of the Fear of Trying and Focus more on Improving and Learning through Adversity.

Both Mr. Jordan and Mr. Alvarez went back to New York to prove just that and came back to Texas with amazing results! Congrats again to both competitors for putting it all on the line once again and showing that One Tournament or Bad Moment in Your Life does Not Determine Who You are.

March 20-24, 2013, Team Alvarez Jiu Jitsu Arlington TX 2013 IBJJF Pan Am results were outstanding! It was a great long week at the 2013 IBJJF Pan Am Jiu Jitsu Championships in Irvine, CA. The biggest jiu jitsu tournament in the world lasted 5 days this year instead of its normal 4 days.

Team Alvarez Jiu Jitsu out of Arlington TX representing Bruno Bastos and Nova Uniao took it’s biggest team yet with 11 competitors and brought home 8 Medals! In the biggest tournament of the year with over 3,000 competitors, it very hard just to get 1 competitor up on the medal podium let alone 8. Out of those 8 medals, Team Alvarez had 5 competitors take GOLD with the majority of them having at least 4 matches each.

On Wednesday, to kick off the first day of the tournament was Ms. Miriam Villar for Team Alvarez. Ms. Villar fighting in the White Belt Light Feather division with only 6 months of Jiu Jitsu training, had 4 tough matches and brought home the GOLD in her first ever Pan Am tournament. She accomplished something very great in just a short amount of time on the mat.

On Thursday, Mrs. Natalia Shepler fighting in the Blue Belt Light Feather division had 4 tough fights and brought home the GOLD as well. She now has the IBJJF World and Pan title at Blue Belt. Mr. Ryne Sandhagen fighting in the Purple Belt Super Heavy division had 3 hard fights but came up short in the finals and brought home a very hard earned Silver Medal.

On Friday, Mr. Shawn Coughlan fighting in the Blue Belt Master Feather division, gave it his all in his first match but came up short in first match by an Advantage point and was out of the tournament in the first round. Big congrats to Mr. Coughlan for leaving it all on the mat. Mr. Vin Abadie was up next. Mr. Abadie fighting in the Blue Belt Master Feather division had 5 exciting matches with 2 of those winning by submission and 3 by points to bring home the GOLD. Mr. Abadie received his Purple Belt on the medal podium after such an amazing achievement. Mr. Jordan Shepler, fighting in the Blue Belt Master Middle division, had 4 hard fights winning 2 by submission and 2 by points to bring home the GOLD as well and like his wife Natalia, has an IBJJF World and Pan title at Blue Belt. Mr. Nathan Hallford fighting in the Purple Belt Master Heavy division gave it his all as well but came up short in first match. Great work out there Mr. Hallford. Later that evening Mr. Shepler fought in the Absolute division where he won 2 matches and lost in the finals to bring home the Silver medal in the Blue Belt Master Absolute. Amazing job Mr. Shepler.

On Saturday, it was time for the Juveniles to do work along with head instructor of Alvarez BJJ, Mr. Alvarez. Mr. Tristan Sanchez fighting in Blue Belt Juvenile 2 Middle Weight division came up short 4-2 in his first match. Mr. Sanchez fought hard but just couldn’t finish a sweep attempt that would of gave him the win. Mr. Austin Kells fighting in the Blue Belt Juvenile Light Weight division won his first match 4-0 then came up short in 2nd match just missing the medal rounds. Mr. Justin Rebolloso fighting up in weight in the Blue Belt Juvenile 1 Feather weight division had a round robin division where had to overcome the same opponent twice. He won his first match on points then won his finals match by a very nice Bow N Arrow choke. That win gave Mr. Rebolloso his 2nd IBJJF Pan Am title in the Blue Belt Juvenile division at only 15 years old. Mr. Alvarez, fighting in the Black Belt Senior 1 Light Feather division was the last competitor up for Team Alvarez. Mr. Alvarez lost a hard fought match in the semi finals to give him the Bronze medal. Mr. Alvarez has now placed or won in 7 consecutive IBJJF Pan Am tournaments since the year 2007. Mr. Alvarez now has 1 Gold at Brown Belt and at Black Belt, now has 1 Gold, 2 Silvers and 3 Bronze medals at the Pans.

Team Alvarez Jiu Jitsu Arlington TX had an amazing week and accomplished some amazing things. Again, to bring home a medal in the biggest jiu jitsu tournament on the planet is one thing but to bring home 5 Golds, 2 Silvers and 1 Bronze with only 11 competitors is just outstanding. Congrats again to all Team Alvarez competitors for giving their all and putting on amazing display of Heart, Will and Jiu Jitsu.

3/3/13, Alvarez Jiu Jitsu Arlington TX wins Double Gold at the 2013 Dallas NewBreed for the 2nd year in a row!  It was an awesome day for the Alvarez BJJ Kids and Adult teams as they both took 1st place overall and brought home both Team Trophies.

Both the Kids and Adult teams had a great 2012 and have been working hard already in 2013 as the results speak for themselves.

Both the Kids and Adult teams had some new students join the competition team for the 1st time and did very well.  Some of the new stand outs of the day from the Kids team were Mr. Brett Taylor that took Double Gold and Mr. Austin Herle took Double Gold. Some of the new stand outs of the day for the Adult team were Mr. Ebuka Ananti that took Gold and Silver and Mr. Donavan Johnson took Gold and Silver.

Of course Team Alvarez Jiu Jitsu Arlington TX had some of the veterans from the Kids team that did great as well like Mr. Parker Richardson that took Double Gold, Mr. Joe Robledo took Double Gold and Ms. Jessica Crane that took Gold and Silver.  From the Adult team Ms. Natalia Shepler took Double Gold, Mr. Jordan Shepler Gold and Silver, Mr. Vin Abadie took home the Gold, Mr. Shawn Coughlan took Gold and Mr. Tristan Sanchez (only 16 years old) fought in 4 men’s division and brought home 3 Golds and 1 Silver.

Bringing home both the Kids and Adult Teams trophies was a great start for Team Alvarez for 2013. Team Alvarez BJJ Arlington TX looks to continue their hard work to see what other great achievements can made throughout the year. Stay tuned for more results.

3/6/13, Team Alvarez Ladies Belt Promotions at Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Arlington TX were awesome! It was a great night on the mats for Team Alvarez Jiu Jitsu Arlington TX as two students received some long over due belt promotions.

First up  in the Kids Advanced Class, was Ms. Katherine Crane getting promoted to Orange Belt and celebrating her 10th Birthday! Ms. Katherine has been training with Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for almost 5 years now. Ms. Katherine trains at least 5 days a week in both the Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling programs at Alvarez BJJ Arlington TX. She is a great competitor on the mat,  gets all A’s in school, loves reading books and is a huge help around the academy  as she always helps disinfect the mats and picks up trash laying around at the end of the night.

Next up was Ms. Rebecca Steele in the Adult Advanced class. Ms. Rebecca has been with Alvarez Jiu Jitsu for almost 3 years now and has been a great addition to the Women’s Jiu Jitsu program. Ms. Rebecca is a student at DBU and is great Swimming Coach for kids in the Mansfield TX area. Along with juggling college and work, Ms. Rebecca has maintained her passion for Jiu Jitsu and did not let other obstacles in Life stop her from achieving her goal of getting her Blue Belt.

3/3/13,  Danny Alvarez Jiu Jitsu Arlington TX wins Double Gold 2013 IBJJF Boston Open! It was a long but successful day for Mr. Danny Alvarez, Head Instructor of Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Arlington TX yesterday. Mr. Alvarez has been traveling and coaching his team for the past 4 consecutive weeks. For the past 4 weeks Mr. Alvarez has traveled to San Antonio, Los Angeles, Houston and Keller TX to Coach and guide his students to victory but yesterday it was turn.

With the 2013 IBJJF Boston Open so close to the 2013 Pan Ams, no one was able to travel to Boston with Mr. Alvarez. Normally, Mr. Alvarez has a few students with him or his coach Mr. Bruno Bastos there with him when he competes to help give him the score and time during his matches. Even still, Mr. Alvarez was not going to let that stop him from reaching his Goals of going to Boston, MA for the first time ever and the goal of taking Gold at the Boston Open. Mr. Alvarez booked his flight and headed North East to test himself against the best that the Boston area had to offer.

Fortunately, Mr. Alvarez and Team Alvarez Jiu Jitsu is an Association with Team Nova Uniao which a World Class and World Wide organization. Team Nova Uniao had a few affiliations at the Boston Open which was great for Mr. Alvarez as they all gave him a hand in helping him during his matches.  Mr. Alvarez says “Thank You!” to all those students from Vitor Shaolin’s in New York and Danilo Cherman from Connecticut that helped him.

Mr. Alvarez ended up  taking Double GOLD by winning his Feather Weight and the Open Weight Class divisions.

Mr. Alvarez always talks to his students and competitors about Excellent Preparation for tournaments! He always expresses that if you Run your Miles, Do your Strength and Conditioning, Pick the Hardest and Toughest training partners in class, Study Matches, Eat Healthy Foods that will give you fuel for training and do a lot of Mental Preparation, You will be Tough to Beat!

He also expresses that if you are Missing anyone of those details that are in Your Control,  your chances of coming up short in competition become Much Higher.

Mr. Alvarez looks forward to Leading by Example for his students whenever he can. By being out Front and showing that it doesn’t matter if you Win or Lose but instead its about how much Effort you put into Giving it Your All and Your Best is what matters most. Mr. Alvarez always tells his students that he will Never be Disappointed in them as long as they go out there and give their Best shot.

So many students are Fearful of competition because of letting their friends, family and coach down but by Mr. Alvarez showing that he has More to Risk than anyone because he is the Instructor and the Coach just goes to show how much of  a ‘Lead by Example’ type Coach and Instructor he really is.

Mr. Alvarez would like to thank God for blessing hime with opportunity to travel, compete and take 1st place, all his Family and Friends, Coach Bruno Bastos, all his students that helped him prepare for battle and the rest of Team Alvarez for their support.
