Saturday and Sunday May 12th & 13th was the first weekend that NAGA came to the DFW area in 2012. Team Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu out of the Arlington & Mansfield TX area had a great team with a lot of the veteran competitors along with a lot of the great new additions that recently joined the team. Team Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 2012 NAGA Dallas results were just outstanding as just about all of the Team Alvarez competitors brought home medals, swords and championship belts. Saturday May 12th was the day for all of the adults and teens 14 years old and up to compete. Mr. Blake Wright, taking home the Bronze Medal was the only teenager to represent Team Alvarez on Saturday. Mr. Rob Crosley was the standout of the day taking home  Gold medals in both the GI and NO GI divisions. All competitors on Saturday fought hard and representing very well. On Mother’s Day, Sunday the 13th was time for all of the Team Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 13 years and under to take to the mats and display their skills. Team Alvarez had one of the biggest teams in the tournament looking to try and give it their best shot to become 7 X NAGA team champions. So many of the Team Alvarez Kids team took 1st place in both GI and NO GI divisions. A lot of the great new additions to the team with just a few months experience took home medals and swords. Mr. Luke Garcia, Kyle Morfin, Kate Renner, Carly Bolding, Raymond and Ariel just to name a few all took home 1st place awards. A lot of the veteran and expert division kids like Parker Richardson, Eric Two Lance, Jaden Two Lance, Taylor Parks, John Gloria, Lee Crosley, Cierra Shen, Kiana Shen, Ethan Martinez, Irving Gonzales and many more all took 1st place to take home a championship belt or samurai sword. It was a fun and amazing day with a lot of smiles and happy faces. Team Alvarez Kids team have been working hard for months and were well prepared and showed it. Sunday 5/6/12 was another great weekend for Team Alvarez BJJ out of Arlington, TX.  Team Alvarez representing Bruno Bastos and Team Nova Uniao have been preparing for months for the IBJJF Dallas Open in Denton, TX! All the blood, sweat and tears all paid off as the Team Alvarez BJJ 2012 Dallas Open results were outstanding! With Team just hitting their 4th year mark in the month of may, Team Alvarez came to battle to show everyone just how hard they have been working. Team Alvarez had 32 Kid and Adult competitors with 27 of them taking home medals! Team Alvarez took home 15 Gold Medals, 7 Silver Medals and 7 Bronze Medals to contribute 29 Medals and helped Team Nova Uniao accumulate enough points to take home both the Kid and Adult team trophies. Recognizing all of Team Alvarez’s hard work and achievements for the day, Professor Bastos gave head instructor of Alvarez BJJ, Danny Alvarez, the honor of taking home both Kid and Adult Team trophies to display in their academy.  It was a moment that will always be remembered and cherished to be recognized with such an honor and to be able to display such prestigious trophies in their academy. Also, there were some very special belt promotions given out on the medal podium with Mr. Bo Montier, Mr. Antonio Herrera, Mr. Anthony Cano, Mr. Samuel Robledo and Mr. Daniel Ehrhardt all receiving their Blue Belts and Mr. Javier Rocha and Mr. Nathan Hallford receiving their Purple Belts to go with the medals that hung around their neck. The standout of the day was Danielle Alvarez taking home both Gold medals in her Weight Class and the Open Class. Team Alvarez definitely left their mark on the competition scene at the IBJJF Dallas Open and looks to continue to improve their games and continue to do big things in 2012. Congrats again Team Alvarez on all of their hard work and achievements and congrats to all of the Nova Uniao affiliates .

May 2012 marks the 4th year Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been open! Team Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu celebrates it’s 4th year anniversary by giving all new students trying out the program for the first time a ONE WEEK FREE TRIAL, 1/2 OFF FIRST MONTHS DUES, NO ENROLLMENT FEES AND FREE UNIFORMS! Never before has Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu offered such a great deal! Team Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu  is so excited for their 4th year anniversary because they have a lot to be thankful for. Team Alvarez has so many great students in their program with ages ranging from 4 years old to 50 years old that have accomplished some amazing things.  Team Alvarez has worked hard to do some great things in the community like their annual Mission Arlington Thanksgiving Food Drives, Mission Arlington Christmas Toy Drives and Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Breast Cancer 5K runs. Students in the Kids Program have brought their grades up and are praised for their A’s and B’s by getting their grades announced to the rest of the class and getting their Progress Reports posted up on the A and B Board. Students in the Kids program also are learning how to eat healthier and are losing weight and staying in shape by all the physical activity they get in the Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling programs. Students Attitudes at home and school along with doing more chores at home to help parents out are all improving!  So many students in the adult program have found Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a more exciting and motivating way to get in or stay in shape. Students at Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu  lose an average of 20-40 pounds in just the few months of training. The biggest success story is Mr. Cody Richardson who is a student in his late 30′s with 2 sons also in the program losing 100 pounds! Mr. Richardson weighed about 270 pounds when he started at Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a few years ago and is now 170 pounds. Mr. Gilbert Hernandez was a 20 year Cigarette Smoker and has kicked the habit for over a year now along with losing over 50 pounds with the help of Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu’s great workouts and Team atmosphere for support. The Team Alvarez BJJ 2012 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Fort Worth, TX was a huge success and a lot of fun for all!  Saturday April 14, 2012 Team Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy out of Arlington, TX pulled together for a great cause and helped raise $1,325 for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and had family members of all ages join in on the race. Some students got out there and ran, jogged and walked to help do what they could to help find a cure for Breast Cancer. Mr. Danny Alvarez, head instructor of Alvarez BJJ and MMA academy had a real close tie to the cause as he lost his aunt Diana Guerra Machul that he was very close to 11 years ago due to breast cancer. It was his wife Mrs. Alvarez’s idea to put together a campaign to help the cause because of all of the families that come together at the Jiu Jitsu academy and knew they would get a lot of support. Mrs. Alvarez’s idea worked as some families donated money and Mr. Alvarez had team t shirts made to help sell at the academy with all the profit being donated. Team Alvarez was able to sell enough t shirts before the donation deadline and donated $500 from academy. Again, it was a great day of families of Team Alvarez BJJ in Arlington, TX enjoying themselves as everyone got out there to do the 5K and get some great exercise to start their Saturday morning and their weekend. Danielle Alvarez represents Team Alvarez BJJ in Abu Dhabi at the Abu Dhabi Pro Jiu Jitsu tournament April 12-14th 2012. Danielle Alvarez won her Abu Dhabi Pro Trials Absolute Division in San Antonio, TX in November of 2011 to earn her an all expense paid trip to Abu Dhabi to fight against the best in the world. Danielle and her Father/Instructor Danny Alvarez left San Antonio, TX April 8th and will arrive in Abu Dhabi April 9th. Danielle will get a fews days to train and warm up with some of the best jiu jitsu fighters in the world as she has to cut a few pounds like most of the competitors before the tournament starts on Thursday April 12th. Danielle has traveled all over the U.S. challenging herself against the best in the country winning gold at most tournaments and has won her a World title at the CBJJO Copa do Mundo in Brazil in 2010. She now looks to test her skills in the middle east against the best in the world to try earn her an Abu Dhabi Pro World Title. Updates and posts coming soon. Team Alvarez BJJ Pan Jiu Jitsu Day 3 and Day 4 results were the most exciting days of the weekend! Saturday March 31st was time for the last competitors of Team Alvarez to step out onto the mat. First up was Mr. Justin Rebolloso fighting up in the Blue Belt Juvenile 1 (16 yr old) division. Mr. Rebolloso, only 14 years old and only in a Green Belt in Jiu Jitsu had an amazing run at the title as he submitted his first opponent by Triangle/Arm Bar, his second opponent by Bow N Arrow Choke and taking out his Finals opponent by points. Mr. Rebolloso became very emotional and new he made history as the referee raised his hand in victory to declare him the 2012 Pan American Jiu Jitsu Blue Belt Juvenile 1 Champion! It was simply an amazing display of jiu jitsu! Last but not least was head instructor of Team Alvarez, Mr. Danny Alvarez fighting in the Black Belt Light Feather Senior 1 division trying to become the Pan Champ. Mr. Alvarez making it to the finals as a Black Belt for the 3 time as Black Belt but coming up short twice before knew he had to make this one happen. In the finals Mr. Alvarez fighting out of Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy in Arlington, TX represented the Bruno Bastos Asscociation and Team Nova Uniao had to fight Sung Sil Kang, head instructor of Action Reaction Academy out of Korea and also a Team Alliance Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt under Rubens ‘Cobrinha’ Charles. It was a great match between two Black Belts that like to play off their back from the Guard position. It was Mr. Alvarez that was able to pull guard first and strike first as he swept Mr. Kang with a De la Riva style sweep to get the first 2 points. Mr. Alvarez then passed Mr. Kang’s guard to gain 3 points then another 2 points for Knee on the Belly position to go up 7-0. The match went back and forth with Mr. Alvarez chasing submissions from Side Control as Mr. Kang defended until time ran out.  As the referee called time and started to raise Mr. Alvarez’s hand in victory his family and students began cheering like crazy.  Mr. Alvarez himself also became very emotional as he knew  that he just made history by leaving his mark in the Black Belt division. Mr. Alvarez having received 2 silver medals and 2 bronze medals as a Black Belt at Pan Ams finally accomplished the ultimate goal that required so much sacrifice  and hard work to become a 2012 IBJJF Pan American Black Belt Champion! It was a great way to end Team Alvarez’s run at the Pan Jiu Jitsu titles as Mr. Rebolloso and Mr. Alvarez both took home the Gold and was later celebrated with some great brazilian food and a lot Sambazon Acai!

Day 4 of the Pan Jiu Jitsu tournament was great as well as Team Alvarez sat back and enjoyed eating Sylvio’s Barbecue  along with Acai as all the Black Belts and Black Belt finals unfolded. Here are the results from those divisions:

Team Alvarez BJJ 2012 IBJJF Pan Jiu Jitsu results day 1 and 2 were very exciting, frustrating, disappointing and long just to say the least. Thursday March 29, 2012 started the tournament off on exciting note as Team Alvarez walked into the University of California’s Bren Event Center to do battle against the World’s best! First up was Cooper Cardinale and Jordan Shepler both fighting in the Blue Belt division. Mr. Shepler had a great beginning to his first match but made  a mistake by missing the Back Take and his opponent capitalized on it to take Mr. Shepler out in the first round. Mr. Shepler put some good techniques together but that one mistake cost him to advance to the next round. Next up was Cooper Cardinale that submitted 2 of his opponents and won another 2 matches by points to make it to the quarter finals. In the quarter finals Mr. Cooper had to fight his opponent and the Referee as the Referee gave his opponent 2 points and 2 advantages that he shouldn’t have. Later the Referee apologized after the match but it was a little too late as Mr. Cooper needed that match to make it into the Semi Finals. Friday March 30, 2012 started off with Danielle Alvarez fighting in the Blue Belt Feather Weight Division. Danielle won one of her matches by a Triangle/Arm Bar finish, another 13-0 and another 2-0! Now in the Semi Finals Danielle was up by 1 advantage as the horn went off and time ran out as her opponent tried to finish a sweep. The Referee looking confused gave Danielle’s opponent an Advantage point which tied the match up then gave Danielle’s opponent the Ref Decision. Later after the match this Ref apologized as well for not making the Right Call and giving Danielle the win. Again, it was appreciated but still did not change the decision and kept Danielle from making it to the finals and obtaining the ultimate goal Pan Am Champ. Danielle received her second Bronze Medal finish in the Adult Blue Belt Pena Division at the Pan Jiu Jitsu Championships. Later Mr. Joe Gonzales was able to take out two of his opponents out by points but was stopped short in the quarter finals. With such a big tournament the 2 wins was just not enough to Medal. Team Alvarez’s last fighter of the day was New comer Mr. Vin Abadie that has only been competing for a just a few tournaments but still decided to step up. Mr. Abadie was able to get his One Leg X Guard and X Guard sweeps working to beat 3 opponents in a row then made a mistake in the semi finals where he lost by 2 points. It was a great run for his first big tournament experience where he came away with a nice Bronze Medal. Next up on Saturday is Mr. Justin Rebolloso in the Blue Belt Juvenile and Mr. Alvarez in the Black Belt division. Updates coming soon.
