November 3 & 4, 2012, Long Beach, CA, Team Alvarez Jiu Jitsu Arlington TX 2012 IBJJF NO GI Worlds results were just awesome! Team Alvarez Jiu Jitsu out of Arlington TX took 4 competitors to the biggest IBJJF NO GI tournament of the year out to Long Beach, CA to test their skills against some of the world’s best Jiu Jitsu players. After just coming home from the Master Senior World Jiu Jitsu Championships in Long Beach, CA just 3 weeks ago and bringing home 3 World Champions, Team Alvarez took their GI’s off for 2 full weeks to help prepare and make their adjustments for the NO GI Worlds.

First up on Saturday November 3rd, was 2 X World Champion Ms. Natalia Shepler submitting her first opponent by Arm Bar  but then coming up short on points in the semi finals to give her the Bronze Medal in the Female Blue Belt Light Feather division. Later in the afternoon was 16 year old Jay Gloria, winning his first match by referee decision to put him in the finals. Mr. Gloria’s finals match was awesome as he and his opponent exchanged positions back and forth during the whole match until his opponent was able to get Mr. Gloria’s back and finish with a Rear Naked Choke. Mr. Gloria’s awesome performances earned him a very nice Silver Medal at the NO GI Worlds in the Blue Belt Juvenile 1 division. Later in the evening was World Champion Mr. Jordan Shepler fighting in the Blue Belt Middle Weight division. Mr. Shepler had two hard fought matches that he won by points to get him into the Finals. Mr. Shepler’s finals match went back and forth on positions and scrambles but in the end his opponent earned an Advantage point to give him the win and Mr. Shepler the Silver Medal at the 2012 NO GI Worlds.

On Sunday November 4, 2012, was time for Mr. Alvarez, head instructor of Alvarez Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy to fight as he was looking to obtain his 3rd World title. Fresh off his Master Senior World Title that he just won 3 weeks ago in Long Beach, CA, Mr. Alvarez had to run 3 miles every day for two weeks, 9 miles the day before and another 3 miles the morning of before his fight just to make his Light Feather division weight class at 136 pounds. Mr. Alvarez’s first opponent was  Marcus Adriano from Team Gracie Barra out of Brazil. Mr. Alvarez was able to get to Mr. Adriano’s back and submit him with a Rear Naked Choke to advance him to the finals. In the finals, Mr. Alvarez had Mr. Kyle Takao from Team Leandro Nyza Jiu Jitsu out of Hawaii. Mr. Alvarez had a great match with Mr. Takao where he got the takedown early to go up 2 points then passed Mr. Takao’s guard and took his back to go up 9-0. Mr. Alvarez was looking for the submission the entire time but Mr. Takao had great defense and was able to fend off  all of Mr. Alvarez’s submission attacks until time ran out. Mr. Alvarez’s hand was raised in victory by the referee giving him the Win, the Gold Medal and his 3rd World Championship Title!

To top off the day, Mr. Alvarez’s instructor and coach Mr. Bruno Bastos won another World Championship Title by winning his Black Belt Super Heavy division along with closing out the Open Class division with his brother Mr. Rico Bastos to give Mr. Bruno Bastos 2 Gold Medals and 2 World Championships titles for the day.
